Modern life pulsates in the cities - off to the fitness studio in the morning, then to work; meanwhile there is lunch break and a few errands to make, in the evening a visit to that favourite restaurant. People want to be flexible and mobile.
Single-track vehicles will have a key role to play in the mobile world of tomorrow. This is because the demands of the future are obvious: convenience and optimum functionality for everyday use. And of course sustainability, efficiency and ecology are all key aspects, too.

New for 2011 BMW Motorrad is continuing its long tradition of roadster building and presents the revised successor models to the successful R 1200 R with the BMW R 1200 R and R 1200 R Classic.
Both combine a modern sporty and accentuated classical motorcycle design, once again with considerably greater quality and driving dynamics for even more riding fun.
The new R 1200 R is powered by a 1170 cc engine that delivers 110 HP at 7750 rpm and a peak torque of 119 NM at 6000 rpm. The new bike will be offered in three exterior colours: mat metallic smoky gray, metallic light gray, or metallic red apple.
Both the R 1200 R and the R 1200 R Classic can be fitted optionally with electronic suspension adjustment ESA. This serves to vary the spring base and the suspension's pressure and rebound stages at the rear wheel, and the suspension's rebound stage at the front wheel – a system that has established itself as the solution for optimized road handling and comfort.
The basic R 1200 R has a sporty character with new cast light alloy wheels, the R 1200 R Classic presents wire spoke wheels for a deliberate touch of refined nostalgia.

The BMW R 1200 GS motorcycle goes to the dark side in 2011 with a special edition model, the R 1200 GS Triple Black. Building upon a sapphire black metallic body colour, the R 1200 GS Triple Black adds a series of specially developed dark components limited exclusively to this motorcycle model. The Triple Black motorcycle builds on the new R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure that now delivers a maximum output of 110 hp, increasing maximum engine speed by 500 rpm to 8,500 rpm, and with an even broader range of engine speed.
The new GS motorcycles are even more dynamic, powerful and muscular in terms of both torque and acceleration throughout the entire speed range, thus setting a standard once again for the grand touring enduro in terms of performance and riding dynamics.
Designed and built from the start for higher engine speed, the new flat-twin power units in the R 1200 GS motorcycle models, like the power unit featured in the BMW HP2 Sport, comes with two overhead, chain-driven camshafts (DOHC) per cylinder.
The BMW valves are operated by very light rocker arms able to cope with very high engine speeds through their low weight alone.
Radial arrangement of the four valves is ensured by the very compact combustion chambers. As on the former motorcycle models, the fuel/air mixture is ignited by two spark plugs (HP2 Sport: one spark plug), and the compression ratio of 12.0:1 is also the same as before.
Featuring an exhaust flap controlled by an electric motor as well as opening and closing cables, the new BMW R 1200 GS motorcycle family has a particularly throaty boxer sound naturally in full compliance with legal standards.
And to reduce ram pressure and improve the sound of the engine even further, the rear silencer, remaining the same in design as on the former motorcycle models, comes with a completely new interior structure.
Power is transmitted as before by the proven six-speed transmission with larger bearing diameters and a modified distance between the individual shafts, already upgraded technically for the 2008 model year.
In the process the gear ratios were once again adjusted and the final drive ratio has been modified from 2.82:1 to 2.91:1. The transmission of the R 1200 GS Adventure has a shorter first-gear ratio (2.60:1) than that of the R 1200 GS (2.38:1). It is not yet clear but it seems likely that the Triple Black motorcycle will feature the 2.38:1 gear-ratio.
The maintenance-free drive shaft to the rear wheel also remains unchanged, relieving the rider of annoying and time-consuming maintenance requirements particularly on longer motorcycle tours. As before, the stiff and torsionally-resistant suspension, front wheel guidance with the unique BMW Telelever, and the rear wheel incorporating the BMW Paralever contribute to first-class riding qualities, along with the increased performance of the new engine.
In conjunction with optional BMW Motorrad Integral ABS, extremely powerful brakes serve additionally to contribute to maximum safety even in critical situations.
Optimum environmental compatibility, finally, is ensured also on the new boxer engine through the most advanced exhaust gas management with a fully-controlled three-way catalytic converter.
Designed and built for the specific requirements of a grand touring enduro, the BMW Enduro ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) allows adjustment of the motorcycle suspension under all kinds of running conditions and with virtually any load level, simply by pressing a button.
An important feature is that Enduro ESA offers both an on-road and off-road mode within which the rider, choosing specific settings for the spring base and damping, is able to adjust the suspension even more precisely to specific needs and requirements.
As usual, Enduro ESA meets the particular requirements made of a grand touring enduro by additional electro-hydraulic adjustment of the spring base on the front spring strut.
When motorcycle riding off-road, this ensures a far smoother ride without the wheel losing traction and without the disadvantages otherwise experienced on-road such as shorter negative spring travel or greater seat height.
The result is a dark, distinctive BMW R 1200 GS motorcycle with unmistakable presence on or off the road.
BMW Triple Black Special Edition Features...
- Sapphire Black Metallic Body Color
- Black Cross Spoke Wheels
- Special Asphalt Grey Metallic Swing Arm, Rear Frame and Valve Covers
- Black Front Fork and Engine
- Black Seat with Embroidered GS logo

When BMW build a superbike, we have no time for second best. BMW now present the very latest in racing power. With an aluminium bridge, radial brakes, a super sporty tail-up nose-down design, hot colours and the ultimate combination of electronic rider assistance systems: the first genuine racing ABS, whose features include a front-wheel-only mode, dynamic traction control (DTC) which permits varying degrees of slip, depending on the lean angle. The more the rider hangs off, the more upright the bike and the longer the lines on leaving the curve. Never before was it so easy to keep so much power under control. This is just as true on public roads as it is down on the racetrack. The RR label shows that it is a full-blooded racing bike, even though it can also be ridden with a number plate attached. To top it all off is an engine which is our absolute pride and joy

If unfamiliar territory has held you back from venturing into the unknown, look no further than BMW's brand new Navigator IV. With its preinstalled maps of 40 countries in Western and Eastern Europe and over 1.5 million points of interest, this latest satellite navigation system, designed with motorcycle riders in mind, will keep you on track, even in the most remote of places.
Faster route calculation, 3D building representations, extra large touch screen buttons, a lane assistant and junction views are only some of the perks BMW's latest satnav has to offer. In contrast to its predecessor, it carries a multiple-route preview, speed limits are shown for most of the
main roads and vehicle specific routes can be selected.
Unique to this new model, is the 4.3” touch screen which is easily legible, even in bright sunlight. Four additional control buttons also line the left side of the mounting cradle, allowing the rider to use it comfortably when wearing gloves.
Other properties of the Navigator IV include two data fields in which personal information such as arrival time, remaining travel time, average speed, direction and current height above sea level can all be monitored. Even though map data is pre-installed and supplied with the system, routes can easily be planned on a computer and uploaded. Routes travelled are automatically recorded and can be reviewed in programmes such as ‘Map Source' or ‘Google Earth'.
The Navigator IV is compatible with the new BMW motorcycle communication system which will be available for the System 5 and the all new System 6. All street names are therefore audible allowing the rider to focus his or her attention on the road. It supports more than 200 mobile phones with Bluetooth and enables the motorcyclist to accept incoming calls and place outgoing calls directly via the satnav. State-of-the-art stereo Bluetooth technology is also used for in-helmet music playback.
Dave Alexander, Parts and Accessories Manager of BMW Motorrad said: “Given that our customers tend to be adventurous riders who travel considerable distances, we take pride in delivering a top of the range navigation system. This latest entry in the Motorrad Navigator range offers a new benchmark in satnav technology and will take our customers wherever they want to go in the world. The Bluetooth technology used makes the satnav even safer, as riders will no longer have to take their eyes off the road to look at the map.”
BMW Motorrad has announced a significant new offer on two of its most iconic and best-selling motorcycles. Customers purchasing and registering a new R 1200 GS or R 1200 GS Adventure from UK Motorrad dealers, between 01 April and 31 December 2009 (inclusive) will receive a complimentary set of BMW Panniers, valued at £459 for the R 1200 GS and £603 for the Adventure. Both prices are recommended retail and inclusive of VAT.
BMW Panniers are the ultimate accessory for the 1200 GS and Adventure models. Not only are they designed to carry luggage and essential
supplies when venturing out on a two-wheeled trip of a lifetime, but can also be used everyday for a laptop or brief case.
Customers purchasing a new R 1200 GS from any BMW Motorrad UK dealership will qualify for a free set of Vario Panniers, capable of carrying a total load of 10kg per pannier and providing a value added benefit of £459.77. These panniers have a unique adjusting mechanism that enables their overall volume to be adapted to suit the environment in which the bike is being ridden. They can be reduced from a combined capacity of 68 litres to 50 litres simply by flipping a bar in each case. This effectively reduces the width of the motorcycle by 120mm, which can prove extremely useful in congested zones when filtering through traffic.
And the new R 1200 GS Adventure is now available with a complimentary set of handmade Aluminium Panniers, providing customers with a value added benefit of £603.15. The rugged aluminium panniers, which are able to carry 20kg and offer a combined capacity of a substantial 82 litres, are often preferred for enduro adventure riding. They can easily be hooked onto the carriers and can be locked using a key coded to the bike.
The 1200 GS range is ultimately suited to exploration and adventure. The obvious question thus arises: What better accessory to have, than a complimentary set of panniers to go with the bikes? With the added value of this fantastic offer combined with affordable finance packages from BMW Select, the ever popular R 1200 GS and Adventure now represent even better value for money.
BMW Motorrad has also assembled a number of accessory packages to complement its R 1200 GS models. The new ‘Luggage Packs' represent even greater value for customers, offering a saving of £100 on retail prices. The Luggage Pack for both the R 1200 GS and GS Adventure includes L/H and R/H inner bags, Top box and mounting kit, locks, a Top box inner bag and tank bag.
On Thursday 25 th June three intrepid adventurers arrived at Riders of Cardiff, they were on the last leg of undoubtedly a huge motorcycle adventure.
Roger Scheffer, Howard Scott and Jaco Swanepoel all started the massive task of riding the whole length of Africa in May with NO support vehicles.
They decided to use the favourite vehicle of long distance travelling which of course is the world famous BMW R 1200 GS Adventure and BMW dealers Riders of Cardiff hosted a small party to welcome them to Wales (and almost home).
The trip was organised to support ‘The Pebbles Project'. ‘Pebbles' was established in 2004 to offer support to children with special educational needs, particularly those whose lives are affected by alcohol in some way.
The Durban to Dublin Route was South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia , Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, France, England, Wales & Ireland.

Riders of Cardiff’s official opening weekend will take place on 9th and 10th May 2009 to coincide with the launch of the BMW F 800 R.
This is the third Riders store and is the only BMW Dealership in South Wales and the largest BMW Motorrad showroom in the UK. Doors to the dealership were open for trading mid April.
The new F 800 R is radically different and yet every inch a BMW. With a state-of-the-art parallel twin engine with electronic fuel injection, the F 800 R develops 87 hp from its 798 cc, not to mention a mighty 86 Nm of torque. The bike is also highly manoeuvrable, thanks to the use of lightweight aluminium in its rigid frame and dynamically styled double swing-arm, which helps keep its dry weight down to just 177 kilograms.
Over the weekend we will provide entertainment, a BBQ, competitions and free give-aways to customers visiting the dealership together with some great special opening offers. Riders will be open on the Saturday 9am to 6pm and 10am to 4pm on the Sunday
See this exciting new bike in the flesh for yourself, the first new arrival for the new Riders dealership.
