848 Challenge in 2012 The Ducati 848 Challenge returns for 2012 now firmly established as the premier one-make series in the UK. The Ducati 848 Challenge will again consist of eight rounds and sixteen races, including six British Superbike rounds, as well as the now traditional two overseas rounds. The series kicks off at the British Superbikes opener at Brands Hatch before visiting Assen, Snetterton 300, Misano and the famous World Ducati Week, Oulton Park, Cadwell Park, Donington Park and finally Ducati UK’s home circuit, Silverstone. 848 Challenge 2012 Dates The dates and venues for the 2012 Ducati 848 Challenge have now been announced with a calendar incorporating some of the best circuits both in the UK and abroad. The Ducati 848 Challenge will again consist of eight rounds and sixteen races, including six British Superbike rounds, as well as the now traditional two overseas rounds. The series kicks off at the British Superbikes opener at Brands Ha...tch on the 6/7/8 of April before returning to Assen for a third consecutive year on the 11/12/13 May. The Championship then makes its first visit to the Snetterton 300 circuit before the round of the season at Misano and the famous World Ducati Week. The second half of the season is equally enticing as the Championship heads to Oulton Park and Donington Park for the first time, with Cadwell Park sandwiched in between before the end of season finale at Ducati UK’s home circuit, Silverstone on the 29/30 September. The 2012 Calendar gives Ducati 848 Challenge riders a fantastic selection of circuits with three World Championship circuits in the UK but also the two away rounds at Assen held during the ‘Ducati Club Races’, Europe’s biggest amateur race meeting followed by a trip to Misano during the biannual Ducati festival, World Ducati Week attended by 60,000 passionate Ducatisti. The Ducati 848 Challenge heads into its third year, firmly established amongst race fans as one of the premier one-make series seen on UK circuits. 2011 saw some incredibly close and exciting racing and 2012 promises to see more of the same. Riders PTR Honda In 2012 PTR HONDA is proud to announce its strongest ever line-up in the World Supersport Championship for 2012 with 3 teams including Riders PTR Honda. Performance Technical Racing (PTR) is the organisation behind the highly successful Parkalgar Honda team that won 12 races and scored 29 podiums between 2008-2011, finishing runner-up in the Championship in 2009 and 2010. There are five riders in the team and they will operate under three different team names: PTR Honda will feature hot American talent Patrick ‘PJ’ Jacobsen and the experienced South African Ronan Quarmby. Bogdanka PTR Honda will run with the UK’s super-fast Sam Lowes and South Africa’s promising young star Mathew Scholtz. Riders PTR Honda will compete with former British Superbike star Martin Jessopp from the UK. Polish rider Pawel Szkopek - on an identical PTR supplied customer bike - will compete for Bogdanka Honda PTR, giving the Polish coal giant three bikes on the 2012 grid. PTR Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “PTR goes into 2012 with its strongest ever line-up of riders with all of them capable of top 10 finishes in the World Supersport Championship, there is no weak point. After missing out on the World Championship in 2009 and 2010, this is our best chance to win the title with one of our riders. “Riders PTR Honda will be represented by BSB and Macau star Martin Jessopp. He’s got the speed and talent to make an impact on the World Supersport Championship. “All our riders will receive exactly the same machinery and support. Jessopp joins PTR for World Supersport challenge MARTIN JESSOPP is stepping up from British Superbikes to compete in the World Supersport Championship on a race-proven PTR Honda in 2012. Martin, 26, from Yeovil in Somerset, is a proven front runner in the British Superbike Championship with a pole position and fourth place finish to his credit while riding for Riders Ducati. He has British Supersport experience and recently finished second at the Macau GP in 2011. Motorcycle retail chain Riders will continue to back Martin in 2012 as it joins forces with front running British based team PTR Honda – the organisation behind the successful Parkalgar Honda and Bogdanka Honda race teams (runner-up in the World Championship in 2009 and 2010). Martin will get his first outing on his PTR Honda early in the New Year at a private test in Europe before a further test at Philip Island in Australia ahead of the opening round of the 2012 Championship at the same circuit on 26 th February. It is all new to me and I need to go out there and get up to pace. “Having a fast team mate like Sam Lowes on the same PTR Honda will be excellent. I enjoyed a bit of craic with Sam at Magny Cours this year when I was a wild card entry and he was helping me out then with some advice and ideas. Diavel Scoops MCN's Machine of the Year and Cruiser of the Year Awards 2011
The Diavel took the prestigious award despite stiff competition from other manufacturers, but it was its ‘rule-changing’ and ability to ‘redefine the cruiser class’ that impressed the MCN judges. Motorcycle News Editor and head of the awards judging panel was ‘blown-away’ by the Diavel and commented: “There was no hesitation here because I have never known a bike exceed expectations by such as huge margin. It has massive presence as a cruiser and should clearly appeal in an entirely new market for Ducati, yet the performance and the feel of the bike is fabulous. It’s easy to forget it also has a world-leading electronics package which otherwise would have been five years away in this sector.” The Diavel has not only exceeded MCN’s expectations but also Ducati UK’s with sales surpassing initial forecasts and continuing to do so. Having now completed its two fly-away rounds at Assen and Monza, the Challenge returns to the British Superbike paddock for three of it’s remaining four rounds, as the front runners jostle for position to keep their Championship hopes alive. Second place man Mike Edwards (MSKWorks,com) will be looking to re-establish his season and put the pressure back on Morris, as will defending Champion Darren Fry (Buildbase/JHP Racing) and Kenny Gilbertson (Team AOR/Boast Plumbing). Robbie Brown (DMCRacing), now finding his form on the 848 EVO, will be aiming to get on the top step again, having secured his first race win this season at Monza. This weekend’s round in Kent will be made all the more exciting by the prospect of racing on both Brands Hatch circuit configurations; on Friday all the action takes place on the Indy circuit culminating in Race 1, after which the meeting switches to the full GP circuit, with Race 2 taking place on Sunday afternoon. Should Morris repeat his success in the opening round where he took both race wins on the Indy circuit he will surely be favourite for the title. Brown & Morris share honours at Monza 848 Challenge showdown
Free practice on Saturday afternoon was fought out in over 31 degree sunshine with Robbie Brown (Ducati Manchester) immediately on the pace, eventually posting the day’s fastest time of 1’55.971. Special guest rider, James Haydon of Bike Magazine riding the Ducati UK/Mercedes Vito VIP 848 Evo was racing for the first time in over three years since his retirement from the professional ranks and posted an impressive time of 1’57.8. Sunday morning qualifying went the way of free practice with Brown securing pole position, followed by Gilbertson, Morris and Edwards on the front row. Making a welcome return to the front end of the grid was Mark Cheetham (Shorrocks Motorcycles) who lined up next to Darren Fry (Buildbase/JHP Racing) while Ricky Holden showed some great form to line up alongside Haydon to complete the second row. Race 1 was delayed by ten minutes due to unexpected heavy rain and it was enough to give many riders a dilemma as to what tyres to run. The grid formed with many on full wets, a number on a combination, and a brave few gambling on full drys. As the lights went out it was Morris who led the pack safely through the notorious Rettifilo chicance, followed by Gilbertson, Brown, Fry and Edwards. But while the rain had stopped, the track wasn’t drying fast enough for those who had gambled on dry tyres and the field started to stretch. A number of riders, including Edwards and Haydon, backed off deciding it was too dangerous to continue on dry’s. At half distance Brown passed both Gilbertson and Morris to take the lead and it was Brown who took the chequered flag, a maiden victory for the Ducati Manchester team, followed by Morris and Gilbertson, in the first of their two races at Monza. The second race formed up in more seasonal conditions with all the bikes on dry tyres. Morris again got the best of the starts and on exiting the first chicane was leading from Brown, Gilbertson, Edwards, and Hoyles (Hypemoto Racing), but it was Brown who led after the first lap. Morris and Brown started to stretch out a gap over the chasing pack during an enthralling battle for the lead. Haydon was forced to retire on lap seven having been well in contention, while the battles in the mid-pack were also exciting, with Holden, Clinton De Tarnowsky (P&H/Ohlins), Jamie Poole (Moto Rapido Racing) and Hoyles all trading places. Brown and Morris were a split second apart as they started the final lap and it all came down the final corner, the Parabolica. As Morris put the pressure on Brown mid-corner, the Ducati Manchester bike momentarily lost rear grip allowing Morris to dive under Brown mid-corner and win the race by just 0.5 second. Bristol Chapter Rally 8th to 11th July This weekend is the Bristol Great Western Chapter 4th 'Hogs in the Hayfields Rally'.
